With limited exceptions, team physicians and athletic trainers are only licensed in their home states. Therefore, when team physicians and athletic trainers follow their teams across state lines, they are not licensed in the secondary state.
An increasing number of states are passing laws to provide licensing exceptions to team physicians and athletic trainers for an out-of-state athletic competition.
Texas is working with State Rep. Bobby Guerra of McAllen to pass legislation in the 2017 Texas Legislature to protect the team physicians and athletic trainers from Notre Dame, UCLA, the University of Oklahoma, and other out-of-state high school, college, and professional teams when they visit Texas.
