Texas’s Prescription Monitoring Program

On September 1, 2019 the state of Texas will require physicians and pharmacists to check the Texas State Board of Pharmacy’s PMP database before prescribing and dispensing opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates and carisoprodols.

However, the 2019 Texas Legislature has to address several issues to ensure a smooth rollout on September 1:

  • Fully fund integration so that a physician’s EHR can seamlessly connect to the PMP.
  • Create an advisory committee consisting of physicians and other stakeholders to oversee the PMP.
  • Delay the PMP’s implementation date to ensure that EHRs are ready.
