Senator Offers Amendment to Protect Team Physicians

January 11, 2017

State Senator Charles Schwertner, MD (R-Georgetown), the chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, is expected to offer an amendment to the Texas Sunset Commission’s report on the Texas Medical Board that would direct the Board to license out-of-state team physicians when they travel with their teams to Texas.

The Texas Orthopaedic Association and Texas Society of Sports Medicine strongly support the amendment.

The proposed amendment would:

Direct the Board to develop rules that provide a concise application for a temporary license to a sports physician traveling to Texas with athletic competitors or a team of athletic competitors. These rules would apply to a physician licensed in another state who is treating a UIL, NCAA, or professional athlete or team while the athlete or team is in the state.
